I know it's late to blog, but I wanted to put this out there...

Horace 1.9 as it applies to our lives today.

While I was (finally) writing some of my Latin essays, I realized how Ode 1.9 could be spoken to the youth today and still hold almost the same effect (well, given that the youth today would be able to comprehend the imagery...). From the worn, snow covered trees of the old to the young cypress trees who refuse to be shaken by the battling winds, Horace covers the entirety of a person's life and the necessity to take advantage of opportunities at the… Continue

Catullus and Lesbia

(Mr. Moore- here's your blog)

So, we're supposed to blog what our thoughts are about the poems we're reading. I know right now we're reading Horace, but I still can't get over how annoying and gay Catullus is. He really needs to get over Lesbia. When reading all these poems he writes about Lesbia, I get the feeling that he's trying to tame a woman who isn't going to be easy to tame. She's not the kind of girl who wants to be with one guy (especially a dork like Catullus) for the rest of her lif… Continue

Well they say do what makes you happy...but theres a right way and a wrong way for doing it...

I realize we finished this poem a while back, but I thought Id go ahead and post something anyway...were supposed to be reviewing this right? bring back the memories :)

so I feel like Catullus didn't treat Suffenus very well. But that being said - I can't say I really blame him all that much. People who work in the same field I find are very critical of other people in the same field, especially if they are better at whatever the field of study or recreation it is. For example - when watching o… Continue

Catullus vs. Horace

We have been talking about whom we prefer in class, Catullus or Horace. I personally think Horace is a better writer because I like how he only uses elisions when he is trying to make a point. It shows me that his work has been polished more than Catullus’ poetry. Also I love the ambiguity in his poems. It makes the reader think and really concentrate on the poem. However, I think Catullus writes poetry that is more enjoyable to read. I just like what he writes about more, it’s more entertaining… Continue

Well That's Not Very Nice

Dear Catullus,
I greatly resent your comments toward me and my poetry. Your response poem began well enough, saying that I am charming, witty and sophisticated (line 2), but by line 10 you're describing me as a "country bumpkin or ditch digger"! Just because I don't write in your neoteric style doesn't mean I'm "more boorish than the boorish countryside" (line 14).
I tend to like my lengthy verses, I like bringing about vivid imagery through numerous words. You write in your style, and I like it… Continue

Summer Teaching Jobs

No, you can't have my job, but the Ascanius Youth Classics Institute is looking for high school and college Latin students to be faculty members at their summer program in Williamsburg, July 24 - August 7, 2009. Room and Board are covered and you get an honorarium (No, it won't pay for college. Or your books at college. But you could probably get a really nice cup of coffee.)

Catullus 64 Notes

I have posted Catullus 64 Board Notes as a pdf on the wiki and Quia.com. This should help. Chances are the test will not reflect a passage from the end of Cat 64.

Blog Posting

When you publish a blog on your page, make sure to post that fact on the Notes page on the main group page, so we can follow up and read your bits of wisdom.

Time to start blogging!

We have been reading Catullus for almost three weeks, and it is time for you all to start putting your thoughts down in electrons -- what do you think about what you are reading? What do you think about while you are reading? How does it relate to you? This is where you get to express that touchy-feely nonsense that irritates me so much in the classroom.

Blogging

Salvete Omnes! In an ever growing effort to use technology to cover my deficiencies as a teacher, you are expected to blog about the poems we will be reading. As a part of registering for this site, you had to create an account. On your page you will create a blogging section, and as we make our way through the AP syllabus, you will blog about the poems that you read.

Some considerations:
